REMEMBER, PARTICIPATION IN TOURNAMENTS IS MANDATORY FOR ATTAINING BLACK BELT STATUS. BLACK BELTS ARE REQUIRED TO HELP JUDGE AT TOURNAMENTS. COMPETITION IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF EACH STUDENT'S TRAINING!
Tournament Rules:
1. Students are placed into divisions based on BELT and AGE. There are five age groups: 7-9, 10-13, 14-25, 25-35, and 35& up.
2. Students must have two (2) stripes on their belts to compete at their current belt level.
Students with fewer than 2 stripes will compete at their previous belt level and must wear their previous belts.
3. Trophies are awarded to first-place winners in each division. All other competitors will earn medals.
4. All safety equipment (mouthguard, headgear and chest protectors, and groin cups for male competitors) must be worn for sparring. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO SAFETY GEAR = NO SPARRING!
5. Sparring competitions will take place for green/purple belts and above. Brown Belts may also compete in grappling.
The Academy periodically holds tournaments, which are open to all students. Participation in at least two tournaments PER YEAR is required for attaining Black Belt status, and these competitions - in forms, combinations and sparring - are great ways to test yourself against fellow students at your same belt level. Spectators are welcome! Check the calendar page for upcoming tournament dates and locations.
